Eliminating Moire: How Next-Gen LED Displays Are Conquering a Persistent Visual Challenge
In professional environments like control centers, TV studios, and virtual production sets, LED displays are indispensable visual tools. Yet, they’ve long been plagued by a common enemy: moiré patterns. These irregular ripple effects appear on camera when filming a screen, compromising visual quality and potentially obscuring critical information. The industry is now deploying upgraded packaging technologies and systemic calibration to offer practical, permanent solutions.

What Causes Moiré?
Moiré patterns are essentially an interference phenomenon caused by the superposition of the LED screen's pixel grid and the camera sensor's grid. Similar to the wavy effect seen when two window screens overlap, moiré emerges when two periodic structures with similar frequencies are superimposed. This interference becomes particularly problematic when filming data-rich screens, close-ups, or virtual environments, severely impacting image purity and professionalism.
The Root Cure: COB Packaging Reshapes the Display Surface
Traditional LED displays have distinct pixel points separated by black areas, which inherently contribute to moiré. Chip-on-Board (COB) packaging technology offers a fundamental shift. By integrating the light-emitting chips directly onto the substrate, COB creates a continuous, flat emitting surface, drastically reducing non-emissive areas. This physical restructuring fundamentally weakens the conditions required for moiré to form, not only improving display uniformity but also significantly enhancing the screen's compatibility with camera environments.
Flexible Camera Adjustments for Quick Relief
For existing display systems, optimizing camera settings can also effectively mitigate moiré:
Angle Adjustment: Slightly rotating the camera (1°–5°) breaks the parallel superposition of the two grids.
Focus Control: Minor focus adjustments can reduce the sharp contrast of pixel edges.
Lens Selection: Using medium to telephoto lenses helps avoid high-frequency interference often seen with wide-angle lenses.
These methods require no hardware modification and are suitable for rapid on-site optimization.
System-Level Synergy: Tailored Solutions for Diverse Scenarios
Different application scenarios demand a comprehensive match between display technology and camera equipment:
Control & Command Centers: With data visualization at their core, P1.2–P1.5 COB LED displays are preferred, paired with high-definition cameras to ensure critical information remains crisp and legible.
Broadcast Studios & Virtual Production: Emphasizing color accuracy and image texture, P0.9–P1.2 Mini LED COB products are recommended. These should be integrated with broadcast-grade cameras and appropriate shooting angles to achieve interference-free recording.
The Future is Now: Finer Pixels, Purer Imagery
As Mini/Micro LED technology matures, LED pixel pitches continue to shrink, making display surfaces increasingly "seamless." This means pixel structures will further exceed the recognition limits of camera sensors, fundamentally preventing moiré. Whether for live broadcasts, virtual production, or high-end control rooms, LED video walls are poised to deliver consistently clean, true-to-life images.
